The Complete Mod 15 Control Wizard Guide

Control Wizard Guide

Welcome to our Control Wizard Guide, updated for the Heart of Fire, Mod 15. In this guide, we will give you tips and info on how to play the Control Wizard class.

The Control Wizard is a CC (Crowd Control) and damage dealing class. They harness arcane energy which they unleash on their victims.

This guide has a single target and support MoF loadout and a SS AoE loadout.

The purpose of our class guides is not just to show you a build that you can copy and use on your character, but to show you a base build and teach you the mechanics and stats of the game, so you can understand and play your class to its fullest capabilities. Try different gear, feats and powers and learn to tailor your own build for your playstyle. See our guide to making your own build for more info.

Control Wizard Enchantments

When getting enchantments, always get the ones with the stats you are lacking in with your gear, boons, etc in mind. For example, if you’ve capped Crit with your gear and boons, don’t get azure enchantments for your offense slots. If you still need to refine your enchantments, see our Refinement Guide for tips on how to farm refinement.

Armor Enchantments:

  • Barkshield or Negation Enchantment

Weapon Enchantments:

  • Feytouched Enchantment

Offense Enchantments:

  • Black Ice / Gigantic / Ruthless / Brutal / Azure Enchantments

Defense Enchantments:

  • Radiant / Savage Enchantments

Utility Enchantments:

Dragon’s Hoard x2 + QuartmasterX2 + 1 Fey Blessing or Dark Enchantments.

Overload Enchantments:

  • Various Marks from Stronghold Vendor > Corrupt Black Ice / Lethal / Piercing > Black / Red Dragon Glyph

Armor Reinforcement Kits:

  • Power Armor Kit – Armor Penetration Armor Kit – Critical Strike Armor Kit

Jewelry Reinforcement Kits:

  • Action Point Gain Jewel

Control Wizard Consumables & Buffs

Consider to get VIP for the Power of VIP HP buff if you aren’t already. Also always stand in campfires to get the +1 ability campfire buff.

Get one from each of the rows below:

    • Empowered Chain of Scales (Best in Slot) > Adorable Pocket Pet > Tymora’s Lucky Coin
    • Wild Storm Elixir > Elixir of Fate
  • Squash Soup > Watermelot Sorbet

Control Wizard Companions

The best companions for Control Wizard are:

  • Summoned Companion: Chultan Tiger – Sellsword / Con Artist
  • Active Companions: Air Archon – Earth Archon – Siege Master – Razorwood

Companion Gear

For the companion gear from Illusionist’s Gambit, the +4 rings are actually better than the +5 as they have two offensive/defensive enchantment slots and the +5 has an overload slot.

  • Bold/Heroic Gear of the Companion
  • Masterwork Rings
  • +4/+5 Rings

Companion Runestones: Bonding Runestones

Companion Enchantments: Black Ice Enchantments

Control Wizard Mounts

When choosing a Legendary Mount for the Mount Powers, look for a mount that has both a useful equip and combat power. The best choices for a first legendary mount as a Control Wizard is a Coastal Flail Snail or Swarm.

What other mounts you use is not that important. What is important is to get the right insignia bonuses, and many different mounts can offer the various bonuses. To find out what mount has the bonus you want, check out our Insignia Bonus Guide.

All classes and specs should consider using Wanderer’s Fortune before you have refined all your gear and enchantments, for extra refinement every day.

The Best Control Wizard Insignia Bonuses:

  • Shepherd’s Devotion – Protector’s Camaraderie –  Artificer’s Persuasion – Gladiators Guile – Combatant’s Maneuver

Insignia Type:

  • Dominance – Prosperity – Skill

Control Wizard Mount Powers:

    • Mount Equip Power: Quick Action (Coastal Flail Snail)
  • Mount Combat Power: Bat Swarm (Swarm)

Suggestions for the Neck & Waist are outdated. Be sure to mention the new Masterwork III belt and neck (with INT and CHA). Beaded I believe. Also viable Mod 14 is Orcus set. (Demogorgon Belt, Baphomet Talisman, Shard of Orcus wand).

Listed BiS: Cowl of the Undead
Do they mean Crown of the Undead or Cowl of the Dead?
Based on the stats I’m gonna guess the crown.

Why Opressive and not ice storm?

Oppressive hits an unlimited number of enemies. Ice storm is limited.

I’m not sure Barkshield is a better option than Soulforged enchantment. At face value it does, but the fine print on Barkshield is even if you could refine it to the highest of the highest levels, 3 farts would render it useless. When I die in a fight, usually many things are taking my health down. I have all the adds to deal with and the boss is sitting there bashing me. The whole issue with Barkshield is even though 3 stacks would grant me 48,000 point shield, just 1 point of damage takes down a stack. Another 1 point takes down the 2nd and then another point would take down the 3rd. Waiting 8 seconds for a stack is a LONG time in a boss battle. At least with soulforged I’m brought back at 1/3rd health giving me enough time to activate a health stone. Sure, I have 80 seconds to wait for another save, but maybe I won’t need it. With Barkshield I have to play the avoidance game and get 3 stacks up just in time to absorb a normal one hit kill. That won’t happen if a boss brings in 7 or 8 adds. Under those circumstances, I won’t get 1 stack of barkshield up.
